چکیده

We present a detailed analysis of the influence of the group velocity (GV) on the dynamics of optical pulses upon their propagation in one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides (PhCW). The theoretical model used in our analysis incorporates the linear optical properties of the PhCW (GV dispersion and optical losses), free-carrier (FC) effects (FC dispersion and FC-induced optical losses) and nonlinear optical effects (Kerr nonlinearity and two-photon absorption). Our analysis shows that, unlike the case of uniform waveguides, the GV of the pulse, dispersion coefficients, and the waveguide nonlinear coefficient are periodic functions with respect to the propagation distance. We also demonstrate that linear and nonlinear effects depend on the group velocity, vg , as v−1 g and v−2 g , respectively.

Design of photonic crystal devices

The subject of this PhD thesis is the study of photonic crystal waveguides that incorporate discontinuities or structural fabrication-induced variations. For the numerical study of these devices the mode matching (MM) method is proposed. The comparison of the MM method with the couple mode theory (CMT) showed that the CMT can provide only a first approximation to the perturbation-induced scatte...

Add-Drop and Channel-Drop Optical Filters Based on Photonic Crystal Ring Resonators

Here, we propose an add-drop and a channel drop filter based on two-dimensional photonic crystal all circular ring resonators. These structures are made of a square lattice of silicon rods with the refractive index n1=3.464 surrounded by air (with refractive index n2=1). The broadest photonic band gap occurs at the filling ratio of r/a = 0.17. Two linear defect W1 waveguides couple to the ring....

Mid-infrared photonic crystal waveguides in silicon.

We demonstrate the design, fabrication and characterization of mid-infrared photonic crystal waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator platform, showing guided modes in the wavelength regime between 2.9 and 3.9 µm. The characterization is performed with a proprietary intra-cavity Optical Parametric Oscillator in a free space optical setup and with a fibre coupled setup using a commercial Quantum Cas...

Investigating the Properties of an Optical Waveguide Based on Photonic Crystal with Point Defect and Lattice Constant Perturbation

In this paper, a photonic crystal waveguide with point defects and lattice constant perturbations of +5%, -5% are being investigated. Firstly waveguide structures with constant and specific parameters are being studied and photonic band gap diagrams for TE/TM modes are depicted; then pulse propagation in the frequencies available in the band gap are shown. After that, effects of parameters like...

Low-loss guided modes in photonic crystal waveguides.

We study disorder-induced propagation losses of guided modes in photonic crystal slabs with line-defects. These losses are treated within a theoretical model of size disorder for the etched holes in the otherwise periodic photonic lattice. Comparisons are provided with state-of-the-art experimental data, both in membrane and Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) structures, in which propagation losses are...
